Starting a Business

A few years ago I decided that I had an interest in making soap. This was a scary jump into the world of soapmaking because the use of lye can be dangerous. I decided I would gear up and wear the mask, goggles and gloves to safely get this job done and learn a new skill. Little did I know that in both my professional nursing career and in my new home hobby I would be wearing goggles a mask and gloves a majority of the time….( insert big sigh here)

I have learned that it is smart to diversify your talents and interests because you never know what this world is going to throw at you and to stay healthy you need to feel productive and be able to make money for the essentials.

Soap making allows me to have a creative outlet to play with ingredients, formulations, colors and scents in a quiet safe environment. These soaps have also become great gifts for friends and family.

The soap making is the fun part, now I am again stretching my skills and trying to start a business from my hobby. I had no idea how many steps there are for starting a business, covering the legal and accounting aspects as well as inventory management and advertising, I’m sure there are other aspects I have not realized yet.

I will continue to work on building my business organization and computer skills this winter and anticipate the spring as I always do! This spring will be special as we are adding goats to our homestead. I have dreamed of goats for a long time but never thought I may be able to write them off as a business expense.

Stay tuned as we prepare for our new friends and learn new animal husbandry skills!
